Imagine an old tree, once tall and straight, now bent down and near strangled with thorns and entangled with ropes of weeds.

Once upon a time it pointed to heaven, now it's bent over by the weight of its years.

Does that sound at all like you?

As little as ten years ago, my husband and I would drive home for the weekend to visit family and all I could think about while we were there were the people we might run into that were part of our history...and not necessarily a history I wanted to remember.

My past isn't hideous...there aren't too many things that would shock you. But there are some things I wish were different...my husband, too.

Some people look at their past, the habits, patterns of behavior or speech..."the way things have always been..." and think things can never change...that they'll always be bent low by their history, unable to stretch their hands and faces back toward the Son.

But it isn't true.

"You were ransomed from the futile ways inherited by your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Jesus" 1 Peter 1:18-19.

"In Christ, we're no longer defined or bound by the past, old ways of thinking, or even tendencies we inherited from our upbringing. We don't have to be controlled by what we've always known...we've been ransomed from all the things in our past that aren't of God and given the freedom to live and love like Jesus!" THIS, my friends, keeps my head held high (when we're visiting home or anywhere else). I'm truly the daughter of the King, and he set me free. I don't have to be the old me ever again, and I don't have to let the things the old me did cause me to bend over beneath their strain.

I'm free (and if you're following Jesus, you are too).
