I’m a Blissdom Newbie

by Brooke McGlothlin on February 20, 2012

Thanks for stopping by friends! Yes, I’m headed to the Blissdom Conference in a few days and since it’s quite possible that I won’t know very many people there (and by that I mean, of course, that it’s quite possible you won’t know me…) I thought I’d link up with a Blissdom Newbie link-up and tell you a little about me.

1. I love taking pictures, but I’m not a professional. My heart loves to look for the surprises of life…those moments of beauty that you might miss if you go through life too fast. Like this one…

Surprised by Life #SurprisedByLife

2. I’m an introvert at heart and get way overstimulated in large groups of people…so if you can’t find me I’m probably in my room trying to unwind so that I can get back out there!

3. I’m from the country and I like it that way. I was raised on country music…and every once in a while I need some time with Alabama and Trisha Yearwood (and other, more recent artists too).

4. I’ve been in love with my husband since the 3rd grade. That’s right. When he sold his school picture to me for $.50 it was a done deal!

5. I’m the creator of the 21 Days of Prayer for Sons challenge (starting again May 1 – May 21, 2012)! Over 2300 women from over SEVEN different countries have participated in this challenge. I would LOVE for you to join me this year!)

6. I’m the Editor and co-founder of an amazing online community for mothers of boys. Find me hanging out at the MOB Society (FOR moms of boys, BY moms of boys)!

7. I’ve written three eBooks, Warrior Prayers:Praying the Word for Boys in the Areas They Need it Most,  Notes to Aspiring Writers: Your Dream, God’s Plan, and Hope for the Weary Mom: Where God Meets You in Your Mess (co-authored with Stacey Thacker of the MOD Squad). I love these books so much and am so grateful for the real community that has developed around them.

8. I’m a die-hard Virginia Tech Hokies fan…I don’t leave em when they’re down and tend to cause major disturbances in my living room (or car, or any public place) when a game is on.

9. I’m in a bit of a transition in my blogging life. I’ve been writing forever and blogging for three years. I wrote a little resource before Christmas called Surprised by Life: Five Ways to Respond Well When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned, and the subject has captivated me because, well, my life hasn’t gone as planned for the last five years. After my miscarriage last fall, I felt like I lost a little of my voice, and I’m not sure I’ve found it again. So I’m taking some time off from writing in this space until after Blissdom. Hoping I can find me again soon.

10. I homeschool our two little boys ages 6 and 4.  They are my greatest joy and my greatest challenge.

BONUS: You can find me on Twitter and Facebook.  I love hanging out in both places!

Cause it’s worth saying…

by Brooke McGlothlin on February 15, 2012

What is success?

Success isn’t big numbers, job promotions, good grades, books sold, or blog visits. Success is who you ARE. And it’s who you ARE because of what God DID for you. Christian, you are His success! You’re saved! Paid for! And that’s all the success you really need.

Believe what HE says is true about you. Refuse the voices that say anything else. PERIOD.

(Ok…heading back into obscurity for a while! Yes, I made that little box message above…because you and I both needed to hear it today)

Taking a Break

by Brooke McGlothlin on February 7, 2012

Friends,

This is just a quick note to let you know that starting today, I’ll be taking a break from blogging here at A Life in Need of Change.

Swinging…

Nothing’s wrong, I’m just tired. I’ve spent the last year of my life writing book after book and working hard behind the scenes to make them a success. I love this work, but it’s very taxing on me and my family. I haven’t been able to find a groove in my scheduling where it doesn’t feel like I’m working all the time (though of course, I’m not), and when the computer is closed and I’m with my husband and children all I can think about is my ever-growing to-do list.

I just need a break.

I have a prayer box upstairs that hasn’t been opened since our miscarriage. There’s a card on the very top that says, “Baby McGlothlin” and I just haven’t been able to open it. But I need to. I have to. My heart needs to deeply reconnect with God in prayer and I feel Him calling me to open the box and let Him walk me through picking up the cards again.

I’ve also had very little time (OK, none) for my IRL relationships lately. And they’re suffering. They mean the world to me and I want to be able to take time to invest in them again without worrying how far behind I’m getting when I take the time away.

So this time away means the following things for this treasured community:

  1. No more posts here until the beginning of March.
  2. Limited time on Facebook and Twitter…especially Twitter. The more great headlines I see, the more I feel I need to read. I want to re-focus my heart on the Word of God for a while instead of trying to keep up with everything else.
  3. I will still be working behind the scenes at the MOB Society. But I’m asking specific people to come alongside me and ease the burden there a little too.
  4. I will NOT take ad spots for the month of February. If I’m not posting, I can’t bring traffic to the people who invest here, so we’ll pick back up with that again in March too.

That’s it really. I want to loosen up as many of my ties as I possibly can for the next few weeks, and focus on prayer and quiet and my family. I’ve done a great job of training myself to function under stress. And I want that to end.

Thank you for understanding, and I’ll see you in March!

February 2, 2012

A few days ago I wrote about how unqualified I am as a conference speaker. Unqualified…maybe. But then again…maybe not? What does it take, afterall, to be a good speaker? Here are a few of my thoughts. 1. Passion Do you love your subject matter? Love. It. Be passionate about it. Know more about it [...]
